The Environmental Quality Act 1974 - Environmental Quality (Sewage) Regulations 2009 was gazetted on October 12, 2009 and has been enforced since December 2009.

The Regulations, among others, require the operation of the sewage treatment system to be supervised by competent persons. The owner is also required to operate and maintain the systems in accordance with sound engineering practice.
