The Environmental Quality Act 1974 - Environmental Quality (Industrial Effluent) Regulations 2009 was gazetted on October 12, 2009 and has been enforced since December 2009.

The Regulations, among others, require the operation of the industrial effluent treatment system to be supervised by competent persons.  The owner is also required to operate and maintain the systems in accordance with sound engineering practice.  A performance monitoring is also required for the components of the effluent treatment system.
