LEAN manufacturing is a systematic method to eliminate waste or any activity that consumes resources without adding value in a manufacturing system. One of the tools used in LEAN manufacturing is value stream design (VSD). It is used to document, analyse, manage and improve the flow of information or materials required to produce a product or service for a customer with the purpose of identifying waste in the organisation.
The LEAN thinking approach to business management and continuous improvement has been widely adopted by many industries, including food and beverage (F&B) industry. LEAN helps the F&B industry improve food-processing efficiency and eliminate waste from processes. In addition, LEAN also helps an organisation to achieve the following:
- Improve equipment reliability, eliminate unexpected breakdown & increase capacity utilisation.
- Engage employees to actively participate in problem-solving exercises.
- Maximise process yield with no wasted ingredients and no giveaways.
- Enhance labour flexibility
